What is Vitality?
What is Vitality?
Vitality is a independent nonprofit organization run by 16 high school students. It functions as a BSL-2 biotech lab, an interdisciplinary scientific research group, a competition team, and a think tank. Members receive guidance from Vitality alumni, partner organizations, and teachers from local schools.Founded in 2022, Vitality is a year-round program. It is built on three main pillars: academics, self-governance, and service. The physical laboratory is located in Fremont, California. The group consists of high school freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors from across the San Francisco Bay Area, and 5-9 members are admitted each year. The program has a modest cost and is free for students with financial needs. In return, members commit themselves to using research to benefit humanity. Vitality alumni have gone on to pursue many different fields, including biology, engineering, and political science.Members participate in a wide range of hands-on experiences, such as wet lab projects, where they learn and apply biotechnology techniques in Vitality’s BSL-2 laboratory. Researchers are responsible for designing and executing experiments, analyzing data, and collaborating with peers to investigate scientific anomalies and questions. In addition to independent research, members also take part in competitions — including Envirothon, CNSI, and the Conrad Challenge — where they apply their scientific knowledge to real world problems and develop innovative solutions. Another integral initiative is the Vitality project, which members dedicate themselves to over the course of the season; it centers on developing solutions that address community needs which will benefit their environment and make a lasting impact beyond the lab. Through all these opportunities, members gain scientific skills, teamwork experience, and a deeper understanding of science as a catalyst for innovation.

The three pillars, which comprise members’ formal responsibilities during their time in Vitality, prompt each member to become active community stewards. While we do not expect perfection, a constant striving for improvement is essential. Vitality researchers do not blindly follow instructions; they collaborate, bringing a high level of preparation and engagement to each session.We provide the same promise as life itself: to pursue genuine happiness so that the world may become more perfect.
